Our History

PLOS Theatre Company (PLOS) is affiliated to NODA. PLOS was formerly known as the Putney Light Operatic Society

PRESIDENT: The Worshipful Mayor of Wandsworth

CHAIRMAN: Belinda Fraser

The early history of PLOS has been lost (for the moment) to the annals of time. What is certain is that PLOS was founded just after the Second World War, in 1948. We believe that PLOS is possibly the longest running Amateur Dramatics Society in Wandsworth, and we know that PLOS members have entertained audiences throughout the Borough of Wandsworth for many many years.

In its early days, from 1948 until the late 60s PLOS mainly put on Gilbert & Sullivan Operettas and the like. It was only in 1968 (possibly with the advent of falling audiences) that the society started to branch out into Musicals in general (although the society has returned to the staple of G&S many times). PLOS had had its up and downs, it has been an old company and a young company. It also gave birth to another local group, when in 1972, there was a difference of opinion which resulted in the creation of Swanbank Music, who continue to put on Musical Theatre Productions to this day. In turn, Swanbank Music suffered a difference of opinion in the mid 90s and a splinter group created Cygnet Players, another very successful local group. PLOS find it heartening, that with the ever increasing difficulties in securing funding and audiences, that there is no enmity between the groups and indeed PLOS is proud to have several members who are part of one or the other, or both of the other groups. In fact PLOS, Cygnets and Swanbankians support each other's productions and there will usually be a crowd from the other groups at any show!

PLOS, for many years put shows on at Battersea Arts Centre. Originally in the Main Theatre and then in the Grand Hall. It was in the 1990s however, with increasing costs and falling audiences, that a move was made to Putney Arts Theatre, a smaller, more intimate venue. Since that time, PLOS has gone from strength to strength and has reinnforced its reputation for producing high quality productions with a fun and outgoing cast of players. PLOS has, since its inception, put on two productions per year. Since the end of the 80s, this has been a traditional family Pantomime in January and a full scale musical in May / June. PLOS have been kn own to do summer concerts and also to support local fund raising events and carnivals.

PLOS are continually grateful to Wandsworth Arts and Entertainments for their generous support.

PLOS always welcomes new members of all ages and abilities, across the local community. There is no audition to join and members are encouraged to get involved in any capacity, whether on stage, or behind the scenes (costumes, backstage, scenery building, promotion, front of house, etc). We consider ourselves to be one of the friendliest groups around and can almost guarante that you’ll make some firm friends.
